Visit the Juromenha Fortress
Conquered and lost several times, it finally came under Portuguese rule in 1242.
Throughout history, the fortress played a strategic role, being reinforced after the Restoration of Independence (1640), occupied by Spanish troops (1662-1668), damaged by the earthquake of 1755 and occupied again during the Orange War (1801), returning to Portugal in 1808. It was deactivated in 1920 due to the evolution of military means.
Recently reopened after a long renovation, the Juromenha Fortress continues to be an unmissable point of interest, offering a journey through history and a privileged view over the Guadiana and the neighbouring lands.
